CreditRepair.com has removed over 1.8 negative items from its client’s credit reports since its founding in 2012. This credit repair agency will challenge your questionable negative items with all three major credit reporting bureaus, ask your creditors to verify the items they’re reporting, and monitor your credit to address issues as they arise. It offers a one-size-fits-all package for $49.95 per month.

What is Credit Repair?

Credit Repair is the process of removing negative items from your credit report. Negative items lower your credit score, which makes obtaining credit cards and loans more difficult — and more expensive.

You can perform credit repair yourself, or you can hire a credit repair company to perform the service for you.

To do it yourself, you need to file disputes with each major credit bureau — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each credit bureau maintains its own credit report under your name and Social Security number, so you’ll need to file separate disputes with each credit bureau that is showing the item you wish to dispute.

Credit Bureau Logos

Although your credit reports are likely to be similar, each credit reporting company maintains separate information about you. This is because your creditors — your auto loan lender or credit card issuer, for example — may only report to one, two, or all three bureaus. If your auto lender only reports to Equifax and Experian, your auto loan won’t appear on your TransUnion credit report.

You can mail a dispute letter to each of the bureaus or submit a dispute online at each of the bureau’s websites:

The bureaus have 30 days to investigate your dispute. You’ll need to provide supporting documentation for your claim.

For example, if a creditor is reporting you made a late payment, but you can prove with a bank statement or payment confirmation email that you paid on time, you’ll need to supply that information to support your claim and speed up the process.

Your lender must also verify the information when a dispute is submitted, and if it doesn’t, the credit reporting agency must remove the item from your credit report.

Performing credit repair yourself can be a daunting task if you have several items you wish to dispute, or don’t know what you can or cannot dispute. This is why credit repair companies exist — to help consumers navigate the complex laws surrounding the credit repair process.

All of the companies we recommend offer free consultations, so you can speak with a credit repair specialist before committing to paying for services. The credit repair specialist can go over your credit reports with you and tell you what it can do for you, and whether it believes you’re a good fit for its services.

Is Credit Repair Legal in California?

Credit repair is legal in all 50 states. It is federally mandated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which stipulates that every consumer has the right to accurate credit reports. The Fair Credit Reporting Act also mandates that:

  • The credit bureau has 30 days to respond to any dispute.
  • The credit bureau can terminate any dispute it deems frivolous or irrelevant. The bureau must inform you of its decision.
  • All disputes are free to consumers (unless you pay for a credit repair service to do it for you).
  • Any disputed item must be removed if it cannot be verified.
  • Verified items must remain on your credit report. However, consumers have the right to add a 100-word statement to their credit report explaining the situation, which would be seen by future lenders that access your credit report. But the negative item will still affect your credit rating.
  • If your dispute is successful, the credit bureau is required to mail you a free copy of your credit report so you can verify the item’s removal.

In addition to the FCRA, the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) gives consumers the right to hire a credit repair company to help them manage disputes. CROA regulates the credit repair industry and protects consumers from untrustworthy service providers.

California requires every credit service organization to have a surety bond to conduct business. A surety bond protects consumers from organizations that violate the Civil Code of California.

Each state has its own laws regarding credit repair, and you can contact the California State Attorney General’s office to learn more.

How Much Does Credit Repair Service Cost?

Credit repair services charge a monthly fee that ranges from about $70 to $139 a month. Some companies also charge a one-time work fee. The amount you pay depends on the credit repair organization you choose and the service tier you choose from that company.

Service tiers vary by the number of disputes allowed at one time and service add-ons like credit monitoring and alerts or credit counseling services. A free consultation with any of the credit repair businesses we recommend can help you decide which service tier to choose.

Some services, like Sky Blue Credit Repair, don’t offer tiers and instead charge a flat monthly fee. This is nice because it means every client receives the same quality of service.

And, as we’ve already mentioned, disputing items with any credit reporting agency yourself is always free.

Does Credit Repair Really Work?

Yes, credit repair can work for those who have legitimate items on their credit reports that can be disputed. Credit repair companies provide free consultations to determine whether they can help improve your credit scores.

Credit report items that can be disputed include:

  • Errors regarding personal information, such as a misspelled name or incorrect address
  • Items that should have aged off your credit reports but still appear
  • Accounts you don’t recognize and have no knowledge of — this may be a sign of identity theft
  • Incorrectly reported accounts, such as late payments you know you made on time or incorrect credit card balances that are negatively affecting your credit utilization ratio

You can sometimes challenge accurate accounts as well. For example, if you did, in fact, miss payments and your account was charged off, you can send a pay for delete letter. This asks that the creditor remove the account from your credit report in exchange for payment.

But there’s no guarantee that this will work — the creditor is under no obligation to accept your offer. In fact, it could take your money and still report the charged-off account. And, paying off old debts does not improve a bad credit score. The one positive is that future lenders will see you paid the debt, but the harm to your credit history will remain until the item ages off your reports.
