5 Fun Indoor Activities That Save You Money

Cheap Fun Indoors

Enjoying yourself on a budget often involves a lot of outdoor activities that aren’t readily available in the polar vortex like conditions we’ve been experiencing this winter.

The cold weather confines socializing and entertainment to indoor settings (restaurants, movie theaters, etc.) that can be costly over time.

Rather than continuing to pay up for indoor outings, consider these fun and inexpensive activities.

1. Clothing exchanges

Clothing exchanges involve cleaning out your closet and swapping your old and/or unused items with those of your friends – think person-to-person consignment without the price tag.

Not only are clothing exchanges a fun activity, but they serve as a way to get new items for next to nothing and whatever goes unclaimed can be donated to charity.

2. Volunteer

Speaking of charity, it’s always a good time to get involved with a service organization. Sign up with a group of friends and you will only have a great time.

Research shelters that need assistance in your area or plan a campaign to raise awareness or funds for a cause you’re passionate about.

“Don’t let cold weather force

you to open your wallet.”

3. Potluck

Having everyone bring a dish or getting together with friends to cook something as a group (make your own quesadillas) is a great way to do a group meal on a budget without the hassle and headache of figuring out how to split the bill at the end of the night.

4. Game night

Board games can be pricey, but ask around and see what your friends have hiding in the back of their closets.

Have them dust off the old Trivial Pursuit or Monopoly for a friendly game night. You can often find games at thrift shops for a fraction of the price, too.

If all else fails, stick to charades or cards that don’t require much of anything. A healthy dose of low-cost competition always makes for an eventful evening.

5. Take a class.

Classes are a wonderful way to spend time with loved ones while learning something new. Best of all? They don’t have to be expensive.

Donation-based activities like yoga and dance are becoming increasingly popular. Schools and libraries also host a variety of free events from lectures to art exhibits.

You can even check out some free videos on Khan Academy or Ted Talks. They’ll leave you with plenty of food for thought and topics for discussion.

Don’t let the cold weather force you into opening your wallet for fun.
