3 Things to Avoid on Valentine’s Day

3 Things To Avoid On Valentines Day

Retailers know what’s hot on Valentine’s Day and they are happy to cash in by inflating prices on the most popular gifts in the days and weeks before.

To avoid paying the romance premium, it’s best to steer clear of these popular but overpriced Valentine standards.

1. Roses

It may be blasphemous to consider Valentine’s Day without the signature red roses, but the high demand of this holiday staple results in notoriously marked-up prices.

You can get roses any time of the year for a much better price. Try switching it up this Valentine’s Day and save the roses for another occasion, such as an anniversary.

2. Chocolate

You may find a few deals on Valentine’s Day chocolates before the big day, but whatever they are, they won’t be as good as the ones you’ll find Feb. 15.

In 2013, Godiva took 20 percent off chocolates before the big day and 50 percent off after. Why not plan a romantic dinner for Feb. 14 and celebrate with discount deserts Feb. 15?

of the heart-shaped box.

3. A romantic weekend away

Yes, Valentine’s Day conveniently falls on a Friday this year, but don’t expect your favorite bed and breakfast to be offering its standard midwinter special.

There will undoubtedly be plenty of romance packages to chose from, each of which will be accompanied by an overly inflated price tag. Consider gifting a trip for a later date instead.

As an alternative to these choice Valentine’s Day gifts, consider items that typically go on sale in February.

It may not feel like winter is ending any time soon, but retailers are getting ready to bring in the spring collections. You can find discounts on all kinds of quality outer and winter wear.

It’s also off-season for the live entertainment business, so check out deals on the latest Broadway shows.

If you didn’t get your fill of computer monitor and TV discounts on Black Friday, February is a great time to get a deal on last year’s model before the new ones are rolled out.

There are plenty of Valentine’s Day deals. You just have to be willing to think outside of the typical heart-shaped box.
